93.9 Holiday Music Is Back on the Radio

It's already that time of year again. Yesterday my sister, who loves holiday music, was browsing through radio stations when she stopped on 93.9 FM, only to yell in excitement. The radio station made its annual transformation to only playing holiday songs. Despite it only being mid-November, the Lite radio station is now the Holiday Lite, already putting people in the holiday spirit. It seems like this station starts playing holiday music earlier and earlier each year, and I'm wondering why.
As another example, Walgreens has also stocked their stores with holiday decorations, weeks before people even begin to think about the holidays. One logical explanation might be that because people have very busy schedules, these pre-holiday changes serve as reminders. They are informing the population about the holidays so they will be able to start fitting things like decorations, gifts, and holiday family cards into their schedules. Still, it's just a little ridiculous that it hasn't even been Thanksgiving yet and the radio is already playing holiday music! Now I really want the holidays to arrive!

What do you think about the early preparation for the holidays? Is it too early or not?

  1. I think it's too early for holiday preparations to begin. I think stores should let Thanksgiving finish before putting out products for the holidays. I happen to love both Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I feel like Christmas always outshines Thanksgiving. I agree that early preparations are ridiculous! Let Thanksgiving have its moment! However, the day after Thanksgiving I will be turning on the Holiday Lite!

    PS- love the background Claire!

  2. I think that by playing holiday music before Thanksgiving is one of the big promoters for Black Friday. It is "advertising" for Christmas, which gets people into the mindset of the holidays. Because of this, holiday shopping gets hype early on each year. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with this. You don't have to listen to this statoin if you don't want to, but Christmas music makes people happy. Also, it helps stores sell more gifts because people are thinking about Christmas for a longer period of time.

  3. I love the holidays and anything to do with Christmas makes me happy. I know someone who has already put up their Christmas tree and when I first heard that all I could think was "jealous!" But then I thought, would I really want it up that early? And my answer was no, not at all. The holidays are a special season and anything in my mind that I deem "special" seems to lose its "specialty" if I get too much of it. It's like if I go to Disney World every week it's no longer as fun!

In regards to this early holiday celebration I wouldn't ask people to stop (because who can stop holiday cheer?!) but I'd hope their would be more advertisement for Thanksgiving so we don't mush the two together. 2 holidays are better than 1!

  4. Thanks Caroline! I really like the comments you guys made about making sure Thanksgiving and Christmas do not blend together. I didn't really think about that!
